Camping near the Salt Creek Falls, Oregon
August 28, 2019
A Gray Jay in the campground.
I finally got some images of a Chickaree (Douglas's Squirrel) that are
pretty good. I had to resort to using flash, the squirrels usually stay in
the heavily shaded areas of the forest. In the past I have had lots of trouble
getting
them to stay put long enough for photos.
Chickaree feeding on some cones.
From the last pelagic trip, these are the beaked whales I mentioned. The tour
leader
had someone identify them and they are Baird's Beaked Whales, a very rare and
not
often seen species. According to my mammal book, there are only about 400 of
them off
the west coast. They stay far offshore and dive to great depths, sometimes as
deep as 6000 ft.
Baird's Beaked Whales have only one small dorsal fin, set far back. Here you can
see two of them.
Townsend's Chipmunk. A new species for me. I have been seeing them
since I got to the coast but haven't had much chance to try photographing
them until now.
