Pelagic Trip out of Newport
with Oregon Pelagic Tours
August 18, 2019
Photographing sea birds from a boat is extremely difficult, even if one can get
close.
Once we are past the jetties, the boat is always moving, up, down, sideways, and
it is hard
enough just to stand without getting thrown off your feet let alone take photos.
At least I didn't get seasick!
Marbled Murrelets, lifer
Rhinoceros Auklet, lifer. Terrible photo, maybe I can get better on the next
trip.
Cassin's Auklet, lifer
Black-footed Albatross, lifer. I've always wanted to see an
albatross, today I saw two species, and about 350 of these Black-footed
Albatross.
The other species of albatross, a Laysan Albatross. We only saw one. Lifer.
Tufted Puffin, not a lifer but I had no photos before.
Pink-footed Shearwater, lifer.
I had lots of photos like this, blurry. But this one is a lifer, a Buller's
Shearwater.
The only one I saw. Wing pattern is diagnostic.
Here's the Buller's Shearwater sharp but with no wings.
Fork-tailed Storm Petrel, lifer. Need better photo, these little birds never
land and fly fast.
Not a lifer, but I have never seen or photographed an adult
Sabine's Gull, just juveniles. Saw lots of these today.
Northern Fulmar, lifer.
