Some Photos from Cave Creek Area, Chiricahua
Mountains, Arizona
September 11, 2019
Another lovely flower that is not in my books. I am going to
stop at the Southwest Research
Station tomorrow and see if there are some more comprehensive books. UPDATE:
Blue Curls, Trichostema arizonicum.
Probably at least 10 years ago I
stood for hours at a feeder waiting for some shots of
Berylline Hummingbird and didn't have much luck. Today, I got some really nice
shots of
this immature Berylline Hummingbird at the Southwest Research Station. This is
only
the second one I have ever seen. Very rare in Arizona or anywhere in the United
States.
A lifer butterfly, a Theona Checkerspot. I would have like a
better angle, but it was on a steep hillside and I'm shooting up at it.
I did get some underwing shots too, and a good thing too, that clinched the ID
as a Theona Checkerspot.
The upperwing pattern and color is variable.
Yet another flower that is not in my books. UPDATE: Mexican Star, Milla
biflora
The Red-bordered Satrys are everywhere now and fresh. I see dozens every day.
