Bats at the Feeder, again.
October 1, 2017
Last night I did more bat photography. I'm getting
the hang of taking flight shots, the bats come into the feeder than always drop
off and then fly off lower than the feeder. All I need is some luck to have them
in the plane of focus when I shoot, since I have to prefocus on a point and then
hope that is where they are when I trip the shutter. I have to delete a lot of
photos. I had a Hognose Skunk stroll by while shooting, I would like to get a
photo of that tonight.
Mexican Long-tongued Bat, spraying sugar water from its tongue.
This would have been perfect except the bat is just a bit out of the plane of
focus. It doesn't look too bad at this resolution but it could have been a lot
better if the bat was where the sugar water drop is. Notice the shape of the
skin between the hind legs, the uropatagium, it is useful for identifying bats.
This is the Mexican Long-tongued Bat, although the coloration looks more like
the Lesser Long-nosed Bat.
The uropatagium of a Lesser Long-nosed Bat for comparison.
Mid-air collision! Competition for nectar is fierce.
