Northern Pygmy-Owls in Madera Canyon
 April 14, 2018

I got there before the sun came over the mountains, it was cold at first.
Shortly after the sun did rise and it started warming up, this
Northern Pygmy-Owl came out of the nest cavity. I believe this is the female.

About an hour later, she came back and went in briefly.

About 2 hours later, I heard one calling from some trees nearby, then
this owl flew in and landed. It has a whiptail.

After calling a while, it flew up into an oak.

I found two owls in the oak, unless one gave the whiptail to the
other, the previous two images are of the female. A copulating pair of
Northern Pygmy-Owls and one with prey, I couldn't ask for a
better morning of bird photography!

I've only seen Northern Pygmy-Owls twice before this and never got any photos as good as these. I will be back at that nest site in the morning, this time with my 500 f4 lens!!!
