This scorpion was under a rock, hiding in a chamber. A
penny for size comparison below.
Compared to the scorpions I'm used to seeing the Black Hills, this is a monster.
UPDATE: This is
likely the Giant or Desert Hairy Scorpion, Hadrurus arizonensis, the
largest species of scorpion in the United States.
Jan. 15: I found this scorpion under a rock on the slopes of
Black Mountain.
Most likely the Striped Tail or Devil’s Scorpion,
Vaejovis spinigerus.
A Tarantula Hawk wasp. As the name suggests, they prey on tarantulas. About the same size as a Cicada Killer.
