Blacklighting in Cave Creek
September 30, 2018

Friday night I was out looking for nocturnal animals when a large
beetle crash landed on the windshield of the truck. It turned out to be a
female Western Hercules Beetle, probably the largest species of beetle I've ever seen.

Saturday night I was blacklighting hoping for more Hercules Beetles. This is
what I got,  a male Western Hercules Beetle, Dynastes grantii. I wasn't sure at first, because
it isn't the right color as shown in most photos. But, I learned that they can
change color, darker to nearly black when they are moist or in a wet environment, like Cave Creek.

I've been walking by Arizona Sisters, since I have many photos already, but
finally couldn't resist shooting one more. This one is in very fresh condition.

Ares Metalmark. Last fall this was a life species, this
fall they are pretty common again along Cave Creek.
