Arivaca Creek snake and another photo of the Buff-collared Nightjar
May 15, 2019

This morning I was hiking along Arivaca Creek when I heard a strange noise, I
stopped to look around and saw a rattlesnake off the side of the trail, coiled but
not rattling much. It was a Black-tailed Rattlesnake, I've seen this species once
before but had no photos to show. Now I do. The tail is solid black. This individual
was about 3 ft. long.

Black-tailed Rattlesnake. I didn't have my snake tongs with me, so
did the best I could using a stick. The snake was pretty cooperative.

I guess I was too tired to be working on photos last night as I didn't do a
very good with the eyeshine of the nightjar. I did some extra processing on
this image and I think it looks a lot better.
