Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls
Arizona State Land north of Buenos Aires NWR
April 3, 2019
After years of trying to find and photograph one in Alamo Canyon
without success, this morning I used my GPS to walk right up to a
previously reported nest site and found two Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls.
Many thanks to Tim Helentjaris for his directions.
Good view of the tail, which has rufous bands, differing from the Northern
Pygmy-Owl.
Streaks on the head are also different from Northern Pygmy-Owl, which has spots.
One was seen in the nest cavity.

Back of head showing false eye spots on nape.
