Looking for Snakes (and other things) Part 4
April 20, 2019
I found two more of these Goode's Horned Lizards this morning.
I can't make them pose like this! I just happened on this one
apparently watching the other one.
A Coachwhip crossing the road. These are large, fast snakes. I watched it
disappear under mesquite and didn't see it come out, so went over to take a
look.
No matter how much I searched the ground I couldn't see it. Then I
realized it was in the mesquite, looking at me. I used the snake tongs to get
it out of the tree hoping for some photos of it coiled, but it wouldn't
cooperate, everytime I released it the snake took off. This one was maybe
4 ft. long.
There are lots of these pocket mice along a road by what I call The Thicket.
After looking through my mammal book, I have to conclude they are
Desert Pocket Mice, a new species for me. Lack of a median band and the
long tuft of fur on the tail rules out the Arizona Pocket Mouse.
A few years ago, I found swarms (in the 100's) of these blister beetles.
Yesterday I found a spot where maybe a dozen were congregated.
