The Sapsucker vs. the Tarantula Hawks
November 23, 2016
Ajo golf course near Ajo AZ
This morning I witnessed and photographed some
interesting interaction between a sapsucker and some Tarantula
Hawks.
The Tarantula Hawks are interested in the sap from the sapsuckers fresh holes.
The sapsucker at first appeared to be a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, but in some of
my photos I can see it has some characteristics of Red-naped as well, so
apparently it is another hybrid. Notice in this photo the small amount of red in
the black border around the throat. I have another photo that shows a small
amount of red in the nape area.
Have to treat these things carefully to prevent a painful sting. Tarantula Hawks
have one of the most painful stings known.
Grab it by the head and toss it.
Here's another one.
Scat!
Arghhh!
