Climbing Cardigan Peak, near Ajo, AZ
February 13, 2017
Cardigan Peak is the tallest peak in the Ajo area. About 3000 ft.
elevation, it is steep, rocky and rugged.
There is a trail to follow and at the top is a tin can with a sign in register
for those who make the journey.
The little town of Ajo from the top of Cardigan Peak. In the center Lake Ajo
(the sewage treatment ponds) can be seen.
The ponds are kind of a hot spot for birding here, the only water around for
waterfowl.
Also in the center is some of the large tailing piles left over from the New
Cornelia Mine.
A view of the New Cornelia Mine from the top of Cardigan Peak. In the center
right is Black Mountain, I used to camp at the base of the mountain.
Here's a
LINK to
Wikipedia with more about the New Cornelia Mine.
I used the camera timer to photograph myself at the peak. In the background is
Child's Mountain, there is an air force radar site on top.
A rare desert rainbow, taken a few days ago. In the background, once again, is
Child's Mountain.
This was taken from my campsite in Ajo Regional Park.
