Photos from Organ Pipe Cactus National
Monument
April 1-3, 2017
I've seen a few Red-spotted Toads in the campground by lights, apparently
feeding on the insects drawn to the lights.
Desert Mariposa Lily, first Calochortus species I've seen with this color
of petals.
These were growing in one place only, in the Bull Pasture in the Ajo Mountains.
A Sonoran Collared Lizard eating small rocks. Good for the gizzard.
A Wind Scorpion in the campground.
The second of two Gila Monsters I've seen so far, in the Ajo Mountains.
Black Widow Spider by the restroom.
Sonoran Collared Lizard in full light. It is giving me the "Lizard Eye".
Desert Rose Mallow, a species of Hibiscus. Just a couple of these were
seen on the trail up to the Bull Pasture.
Another lifer herp, a Red-backed Whiptail. This one is a juvenile. I spent hours
looking for these, endemic to a
few desert mountain ranges in the Sonoran Desert. I still haven't seen an
adult.
An unknown species of spider webbing its prey. UPDATE: This is male Black Widow
spider!
A Coachwhip, another lifer herp. I saw three of these in the Ajo Mountains in
one day, then none since.
