Photos from Miller Canyon and Ramsey Canyon,
Huachuca Mountains, near Sierra Vista, AZ
April 7-10, 2017
My favorite so far. A Lucifer Hummingbird! In past years I've tried to
photograph this species at the few locations where people have them coming to
feeders. The problem with that is they charge fees, have rules, lots of people,
and won't let me get as close as I like or in the position I like. The result is
I had no good photos until today. This one showed up at my hummingbird feeder in Miller
Canyon this morning. I was pretty excited to have my own Lucifer Hummingbird.
Lucifer Hummingbird, a rarity in North America.
Internet reports of a Flame-colored Tanager and a Tufted Flycatcher led me on a
long hike up the Huachucas from Ramsey Canyon. It was worth the climb to get two
lifer birds. This is the Flame-colored Tanager, and there is no doubt that his
one is not a hybrid, like the bird I saw in the Chisos Mountains a few years
ago.
This one is not in the best light but I caught it with a caterpillar of some
type.
Maybe my best image ever of a Painted Redstart.
The Tufted Flycatcher. It is a long way out, but I was happy to
get an image of an extremely rare bird in North America.
On the Miller Canyon trail were two Mexican Spotted Owls roosting side by side.
Lifer butterfly, an Arizona Hairstreak.
Lifer butterfly, a White-striped Longtail, and a pretty
rare species north of Mexico. Taken in Miller Canyon.
